New ‘Alan Wake’ is confirmed to not be ‘Alan Wake 2’… wait, what?

Yesterday, May 9, 2011, the news of there being a sequel to the literary-based sci-fi sleeper ‘Alan Wake’ was confirmed… or was it? Either way, for sci-fi gaming nerds and fans of this cult-classic, this was huge! The information was leaked on, of all places, the resume of a game designer. Althea Suarez Gata is a North-American film and photography artist that specializes in motion capture. According to her resume, she was working with Halon Entertainment on cinematics for a game entitled, ‘Alan Wake 2′. When fans of the game, such as myself, got their sweaty little hands on this news, we feverishly began clicking and clacking our fingers across our keyboards posting the news where it would be discovered.

If you haven’t had the chance to play Remedy’s ‘Alan Wake’, here is my brief review;

Alan Wake is the most emotionally tense and mentally immersive gaming experience of my career. Brilliant writing, layers of subtext, pages of nuance, and an efficacious ending wrapped in a single line of dialogue. Any fan of literature will justifiably be drawn to the “siren song” of a video game containing an intimate sense and depth of literary understanding. One of the key aspects of Alan Wake requiring the most praise is; the creation of an entire world within the confines of the game. The Limited Edition of the game contains a hard bound book containing Agent Nightengale’s FBI files. This little additition adds an entirely new perspective and outcome to the game itself. With the introduction of an alternate point of view, the gamer is given a new lens to observe the events of Bright Falls. As for the DLC, I do not want to give away any spoilers for those who have potentially not had the chance to expand upon the ending of ‘Alan Wake’, but it is on par with the events and strain of the game while exposing new developments and scraping layers off an even deeper story. My hat is tipped to you, Remedy Studios, for the brilliant conjuring and flawless execution of such a niche piece of visual and literary pulchritude.

Now, back to the meat of this article. After the news was leaked of a potential ‘Alan Wake 2′, Remedy Studios was kind enough to issue a press-release, (addressed to http://joystiq.com, where the news first surfaced), to help quell our speculations. Reading the press-release was reminiscent of playing the game itself. You are left with no definitive answers, but your imagination fills in the blanks. Apparently, what we will be getting is not a sequel (i.e. ‘Alan Wake 2′) and it will also not be DLC. Uhm… yeah, I can’t explain it, maybe Remedy Studios can;

It really would seem Alan Wake is very close to the hearts of the fans out there, and to ours too. To that point, it’s a shame that this news leaked before our official announcement which will of course include the visuals and information to support it. Well, now that the cat is out of the bag, we owe it to you and the fans to shed a little more light before we get the chance to officially show them what the guys have been up to.

Fans of the franchise will be excited to learn that yes, more Wake is coming! But to be absolutely certain to avoid confusion, this next Wake installment will not be Alan Wake 2. But neither will it be DLC. The rest we’re saving for our official announcement when we’ll actually SHOW YOU.
We are really excited about this project which a slice of our team has been working on for the last months. It’s something that’ll definitely give more to the Wake fans out there, but just as importantly, this installment will also give an opportunity for players who aren’t familiar with the franchise to finally jump on board.

We can’t wait to show you more, bear with us. Release dates, platforms and pricing are unconfirmed as of yet, but Fall 2011 is probably a good guess. More coming soon!

Oskari Häkkinen (Head of Franchise Development at Remedy Studios)

Nope, now I’m just as confused as before. I understand the need for secrecy, but when this much information has been leaked you’d think they would try to make it less confusing for the fans. Then again, ‘Alan Wake’ was a game designed around the concept of confusion and mystery, so perhaps they are bringing those elements to life around the release of this game. Or perhaps they have created something bigger? And on that note, it is time for me to embark on yet another play through of ‘Alan Wake’ and the two episodes of DLC. Patience is a virtue, and one that I am not well versed in. But, as Alan Wake said;

“Beyond the shadow you settle for, there’s a miracle illuminated.” – Alan Wake
